Dr. Nina StachenfeldDr. Nina Stachenfeld

Dr. Nina Stachenfeld is an Associate Fellow at the John B. Pierce Laboratory and an Associate Professor at the Yale University School of Medicine in the departments of Epidemiology and Public Health and Obstetrics, Gynecology and Reproductive Medicine. Her current research interests include the impact of female reproductive hormones on blood pressure regulation and temperature regulation in healthy women and in women with Polycystic Ovary Syndrome. She also has begun to study the interaction between temperature regulation and metabolism, and its impact on the development of obesity.

She joined the John B.Pierce Laboratory as a post-doctoral associate in the laboratory of Ethan R. Nadel, Ph.D. in 1993. The focus of her work in Dr. Nadel's laboratory was examining the effects of aging and physical activity on the fluid and sodium regulation systems. For the past 12 years Dr. Stachenfeld's research has focused on the effects of reproductive hormones on the fluid and temperature regulatory systems in humans.

Dr. Stachenfeld received her bachelor’s degree in English from Antioch College, a Masters degree in Physical Education from New York University and her PhD in Applied Physiology from Columbia University in New York City.

She has served on the Admissions Committee in the department of Epidemiology and Public Health at Yale University School of Medicine and currently chairs the Diversity committee in this same department.

Most recently, she served on the writing team for the update of the Position Stand on “Exercise and Fluid Replacement” for the American College of Sports Medicine published earlier this year. Dr. Stachenfeld is a Fellow of the American College of Sports Medicine and a member of numerous scientific organizations including the American Physiological and the Endocrine Societies. She is an Associate Editor for Medicine and Science in Sports and Exercise, the flagship journal of the American College of Sports Medicine
