Objectives:
  • Be able to define exercise-associated collapse in athletes.
  • Be able to list at least three classes of drugs that can impair temperature regulation and thus may contribute to collapse.
  • Be able to list at least three results of physical examinations and/or laboratory tests that suggest a serious cause of collapse in an athlete.
  • Be able to list and explain at least three common causes of collapse in athletes.
  • Be able to explain the potential roles of blood sodium, body temperature, and blood glucose in the collapse of athletes.
  • Be able to describe the typical treatments for hyponatremia, hyperthermia, and hypoglycemia.
